Believe it or not, all of us in this class have used, are using, will use or always use Google Translate. Sometimes we stumble upon words in books, newspapers or even our friends' Facebook posts that we don't know. Sometimes if we are just too lazy, we'd ask our friends what is the meaning of this word and often we hear "Just Google Translate it lahhh" when our friends are lazy either. Perhaps, we must have used Google Translate to impress our friends that we know how to speak and write in Korean or even Indonesian language! One thing for sure, assignments make students become much closer with Google Translate *how sweet*.
Typically, we only know how to use it. Have we ever wondered or thought how does Google Translate work? Does it have an invisible man behind our screen monitor to do the translation?
How does it really work?
- When it generates you a translation, it looks for patterns in hundreds of millions of documents to help decide on the best translation for you.
- By detecting patterns in documents that have already been translated by human translators, Google Translate can make intelligent guesses as to what an appropriate translation should be
- This process of seeking patterns in large amounts of text is called "statistical machine translation".
- Since the translations are generated by machines, not all translation will be perfect.
- The more human-translated documents that Google Translate can analyse in a specific language, the better the translation quality will be.
- This is why translation accuracy will sometimes vary across languages.
Owh..it's a new knowledge for me.Never thought of how would the process of translation be.And yeah, I always use google translate despite its direct translation.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's amazing if we think, technology is somehow limitless. I can understand you in any language you speak.
DeleteI always seek help from Google Translate if I can't find the right word in English. Really helps me a lot :)
ReplyDeleteYes. It does help us a lot! However, bear in mind, never use Google Translate to do your assignments. :)
DeleteIn a blink of an eye, this is damn cool!!
ReplyDeleteThough I don't prefer Google Translate that much, because it keeps on giving me unwanted translation aka words that I don't want.
I prefer online dictionary, Wikipedia or sometimes I type in the word and choose Google Image so I can just look at the image of the unknown word. Well, you know me, visual learner LOL.
Yeah..I know that you are a visual learner Sakinah. You don't need to mention it at every comment.
DeleteDuh.. We know you are a visual learner.. But we are not slow learners.. We can understand by just saying it once.. Anyway, thanx for always reminding us.. :P
DeleteHey, you guys are supposed to be on my side :(
DeleteHopefully this will be a heated up convo :p
DeleteWow! I really had no idea that's how it works. Honestly, I thought there will be a translator for every language in this world and they just sit there behind the monitor and translate every word. LOL One thing tho, I dun find GoogleTranslate the best way to understand a certain word wholely. I think it is better off serving the minor things or words that people dun get. especially if you want to translate to a whole new foreign language. You know just simple words. For me personally, I dont find GoogleTranslate is reliable enough to translate a whole document or to do your assignment. But yeah, like you said, the accuracy varies. So i guess there's the answer itself of how it pretty restricted.
ReplyDeleteJust my 2cents Muhamad Farid :DDD
P/s: This comment came from a good place from my heart and mind. No harm intended.Peace out.
You really know how to jest Muz! I gotta agree with you. Google Translate can't be an absolute platform for us to rely on like every single time. But it has a lot of advantages though. Just imagine yourself reading Asahi Shimbun and you can't understand anything from the newspaper and you don't have any Japanese friend to help you. By using Google Translate, it can give you an instant translation within few seconds. How amazing is that. Though we can't really debate on the accuracy because the translation is generated based on millions of documents that have been translated previously by human translators and Google Translate does its wonder to recognize the grammar patterns and translate it.
DeletePlease do not use Google translate to do your assignments.
ReplyDeleteA very good reminder! Will never use it unnecessarily.
